Beyond Buying a Home: Building Your New Life in Costa Rica

Hi, I’m Didier.

I’ve been living in Costa Rica since 2011, and during those years I’ve learned something important: buying the house is often the easy part. Building your new life here is the real adventure.

As a real estate specialist, I help people find the right property, but my relationship with my clients often goes much further than that. Moving to another country means learning how things work, understanding a different culture, finding people you can trust, and sometimes simply knowing who to call when you need help.

And after more than fifteen years in Costa Rica, I’ve built a network and gained the local experience that can make that transition a lot easier.

Understanding the Reality of Moving Abroad

Costa Rica is a wonderful country, but life here is different.

You won’t necessarily find the same products, services, construction methods, administrative procedures, or customer service you're used to. Sometimes the solution is adapting to the Costa Rican way of doing things. Other times, it's knowing where to find an alternative—or simply knowing the right person to ask.

The biggest challenge isn't Costa Rica itself.

It's learning how Costa Rica works.

And that's something I've learned through years of actually living here, not just working in real estate here.

My Experience Goes Beyond Real Estate

Before becoming a real estate professional, I spent many years working with clients in different industries. A big part of my work has always been listening, solving problems, and finding practical solutions.

Living in Costa Rica since 2011 has also given me something you can't build overnight: a strong local network.

Over the years, I’ve developed relationships with professionals and businesses in many different fields. And because I speak Spanish fluently, I can communicate directly with local businesses, contractors, government offices, and service providers.

When one of my clients needs something, I may not always have the answer myself—but very often, I know who to ask or where to start looking.

I’ve also developed solid practical knowledge of construction over the years. This can be very helpful when we're evaluating a property, discussing renovations, or talking with builders about future plans.

The Questions Don't Stop After You Buy the House

Actually, sometimes that's when they really begin.

One client may need an immigration lawyer. Another is looking for an architect or builder. Someone else needs a reliable electrician, plumber, landscaper, accountant, insurance broker, veterinarian, or mechanic.

And many questions have nothing to do with real estate at all.

Clients ask me things like:

  • How would a Costa Rican normally handle this?
  • What's the best way to communicate with local workers?
  • Is this normal here, or should I be concerned?
  • Where can I find a particular product or service?
  • Who can I trust to help me with this?
  • How do I get this organized?

These are completely normal questions.

Moving abroad isn't simply changing your address.

You're learning how to navigate a new country and culture.

Helping You Find Solutions

I don't pretend to know everything.

What I do know is how to find answers.

After so many years of living here, I know who to call, where to look, and how to connect my clients with the right people.

Sometimes that's an immigration lawyer. Sometimes it's a reliable contractor, architect, or building specialist. Other times, a client simply needs some help understanding how something is normally done in Costa Rica.

And sometimes I get a message that simply says:

“Didier, do you know somebody who can help me with this?”

Very often, I do.

And if I don't, I usually know where to start looking.

Building Your Own Network in Costa Rica

My goal isn't for my clients to depend on me forever.

Over time, you start building your own network.

You find the gardener you trust, the mechanic you call, the contractor who understands your house, the restaurant where they know you, and the neighbors you can ask when you need something.

Little by little, things that seemed complicated when you first arrived become normal.

That's when Costa Rica starts to feel less like the country you moved to and more like home.

I'm simply there to help make that beginning a little easier.

A Relationship That Doesn't End at Closing

For me, handing over the keys doesn't necessarily mean the end of our relationship.

This additional support is something I offer to clients who choose to work with me and ultimately purchase their property through me.

Why?

Because meaningful guidance takes time, experience, and commitment. When someone has trusted me to help with something as important as finding their home in Costa Rica, I'm happy to continue being a resource afterward.

Many of the relationships I build with clients therefore continue long after closing.

Because buying the house is one moment.

Building your life here is the real adventure.

Thinking About Starting a New Life in Costa Rica?

If you're considering moving to Costa Rica, particularly Atenas or the Central Valley, I can certainly help you search for the right property.

But what I hope to offer goes beyond finding you a house.

I want to help you understand where you're moving, connect you with good people, navigate some of the differences you'll encounter, and make those first months of building your new life here a little easier.

You don't need to know everything before you arrive.

You learn as you go, you build your network, and eventually the unfamiliar starts to feel familiar.

Finding the right home is the beginning. Feeling at home is what comes next.

Cynthia was amazing!! Her knowledge of everything Costa Rican made the whole process of buying our first home in Atenas effortless. She walked us through every step of the way and never hesitated to answer our endless questions. We had complete confidence in her and her team. On top of all of that, she is also a genuinely great person! My husband and I feel lucky to know her. Do not hesitate contact her for your real estate needs. She's truly the best!

We highly recommend Cynthia for your real estate needs. She helped us purchase our house and worked very diligently for us during the process. The house was our dream, checking all the boxes, we knew it was the one for us. The sale wasn't an easy one. There were regisstration and government paperwork concerns corrected as a condition that we didn't know of or realize. Cynthia identified the concerns and made us inderstand it was in our best interest to have the concerns corrected as a condition of the sale as they could affect us in the future If we decided to sell. Cynthia took on getting everything in order for us to proceed with the purchase. She definitely went above and beyond for us in making our dream home a reality.

Even after the sale, when we had a question that didn't pertain to the sale or Cynthia's responsibility, she helped us. She asnwered our questions, made recommendations and put us onto the right people to help us. Her knowledge, experience and work ethic is second to none. Cynthia is the one to have in your corner.
